Collar to Coexist: Elephant Solutions (10-minute Video)
Part of Mozambique Wildlife Alliance’s (MWA) mission in Mozambique is to mitigate and manage human-wildlife conflict by implementing measures to promote tolerance.
A component of that program is collaring elephants with GPS devices. Once the collars are deployed, MWA can monitor their location in real-time and determine the likelihood of conflict in the landscape.
MWA can proactively alert communities when elephants are close to their fields. This allows time for the MWA ground team and the communities to implement mitigation techniques.
The collaring of elephants is a critical element of the process. Although the procedure sounds simple in theory, it is complicated in practice due to the number of variables.
